ReThink Microschools' Fifth Grade Program for Students With Autism

Two students work with teacher to build a project.

Our 5th Grade Program

Fifth grade is a bridge between elementary and middle school. Students strengthen core academic skills while learning to manage more complex assignments, think more critically, and take greater responsibility for their learning. At Prodigy Center for Education, small classes allow teachers to provide individualized support while encouraging students to become increasingly independent.

Students analyze more challenging fiction and informational texts, support their thinking with evidence, and develop organized multi-paragraph writing. Mathematics emphasizes fractions, decimals, multi-digit operations, measurement, geometry, and multi-step problem-solving while helping students explain and apply their mathematical thinking.

Science and social studies include investigation, research, note-taking, discussion, and projects that require students to gather information and communicate what they have learned. Throughout the day, students practice organization, planning, self-advocacy, time management, and assignment completion as they prepare for the expectations of middle school.

Our goal is to help students leave fifth grade with stronger academic skills, greater independence, and confidence in their ability to handle what comes next.

5th Grade Focus

  • Advanced Reading & Comprehension: Analyzing fiction and informational text, identifying themes and main ideas, making inferences, comparing sources, and supporting conclusions with evidence.

  • Writing & Communication: Planning, drafting, revising, and editing organized multi-paragraph narrative, informational, and opinion writing using relevant details and evidence.

  • Mathematical Application: Strengthening multi-digit operations, fractions, decimals, measurement, geometry, volume, and multi-step problem-solving while applying mathematics to real-world situations.

  • Research & Inquiry: Conducting investigations, gathering information from multiple sources, taking notes, evaluating evidence, and presenting findings in science and social studies.

  • Middle School Readiness: Developing organization, planning, assignment management, time awareness, self-advocacy, problem-solving, and greater ownership of academic responsibilities.

Why the Science of Reading in 5th Grade?

By fifth grade, students are expected to use reading to learn increasingly complex information across every subject. Reading instruction therefore focuses heavily on comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and the ability to analyze information while continuing to address foundational reading skills when students need additional support.

Our approach emphasizes:

  • Reading increasingly complex literature and informational text

  • Developing academic vocabulary and knowledge of word structure

  • Strengthening fluency and reading stamina

  • Identifying themes, main ideas, and supporting evidence

  • Making inferences and drawing conclusions

  • Comparing ideas and information across texts

  • Using reading skills to learn in science, social studies, and other subjects

What Reading Instruction Looks Like in 5th Grade

Fifth-grade students increasingly use reading as a tool for independent learning.

Students work on:

  • Word Analysis: Using roots, prefixes, suffixes, syllables, and context to understand unfamiliar words

  • Fluency & Stamina: Reading longer and more challenging material accurately and efficiently

  • Academic Vocabulary: Understanding and applying increasingly sophisticated vocabulary across subjects

  • Literary Analysis: Examining theme, character development, point of view, structure, and evidence

  • Informational Reading: Identifying main ideas, comparing sources, interpreting details, and integrating information

  • Evidence-Based Response: Citing information from texts to explain ideas, support conclusions, and develop written responses
