Grade Program
First grade is an important year for building the academic foundations children will use throughout elementary school. At Prodigy Center for Education, students learn in a small, structured classroom where instruction can be personalized to their strengths, readiness, and learning needs.
Students develop early reading skills through explicit instruction in phonemic awareness and phonics while building fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Writing instruction helps students move from words and simple sentences toward expressing complete ideas. In mathematics, students strengthen number sense while developing addition, subtraction, place value, measurement, and early problem-solving skills.
Hands-on science, stories, creative projects, and classroom discussions encourage curiosity and communication. Predictable routines help students practice following directions, organizing materials, completing tasks, interacting with classmates, and becoming increasingly independent.
Our goal is to give students strong academic foundations while helping them experience success, build confidence, and develop positive learning habits.
1st Grade Focus

Beginning Reading & Phonics: Developing phonemic awareness, connecting sounds to letters, blending and decoding words, recognizing high-frequency words, and building early reading fluency.

Writing & Communication: Writing complete sentences, applying beginning spelling and punctuation skills, organizing simple ideas, and communicating thoughts through speaking and writing.

Foundational Mathematics: Building number sense, place value, addition, subtraction, measurement, shapes, and early problem-solving through visual models, manipulatives, and guided practice.

Science & Social Studies: Exploring the natural world, communities, people, and places through stories, observations, hands-on investigations, and classroom projects.

Classroom Independence: Following routines, organizing materials, transitioning between activities, completing short assignments, asking for help, and taking increasing responsibility for learning.
